This year our First Day Hike will take place on part of the Pacific Northwest Trail; a 1,200 mile National Scenic Trail that runs right through Deception Pass State Park! It will be a two-part event for you to enjoy – a hike along Goose Rock and then a fun presentation by the Pacific Northwest Trail Association (PNTA).

Starting at the Cornet Bay Retreat Center, Park staff will guide our hike around Goose Rock and then up and over the top. Along the way we will have great views of Cornet Bay, go through thickly wooded forests, and climb to one of the highest points on Whidbey Island. From the summit you can look out west to Deception Island, south over Cranberry Lake to much of Whidbey, and east over to Cornet Bay to the Cascades.

Remember to dress in layers and wear hiking shoes. Bring snacks, water and a good attitude! :) This hike is on, rain or shine.

Back at the Retreat Center, the Deception Pass Park Foundation will offer warm drinks and snacks. The PNTA will present “Experience the Pacific Northwest Trail.”

More on the PNT and the presentation:

The Pacific Northwest Trail starts like a drop of rain on the flanks of the Continental Divide and winds its way west, like a river that flows to the Pacific Ocean.  The trail traverses three states, three national parks, seven national forests, numerous state parks, and every major mountain range across one of the most wild and unspoiled regions of the lower 48.

Experience the PNT discusses the history and geography of one of America’s newest and most challenging National Scenic Trails while following in the footsteps of a 1200 mile thru-hike from Glacier National Park in Montana to the Wilderness Coast of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.

The story will be told through a variety of media including photos, video, and short stories.  Pacific Northwest Trail thru-hikers and Association staff will be present to take questions after the event.

Bio of the presenter: Jeff Kish – Executive Director, Pacific Northwest Trail Association (PNTA)

Jeff is an accomplished thru-hiker, with complete end-to-end hikes of both the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) under his belt.  As a outdoor industry journalist, he brought the story of the PNT to an international audience in 2014, and then went on to tour the Northwest with a multimedia presentation about his experiences the following year.  In 2015, he was appointed to the Department of Agricultures Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail Advisory Council.  He began his work with the PNTA in 2016.
